Leadership assessment and development
Situation
A UK-based fire and rescue service consisting of some 1000 members of staff wanted to develop the leadership skills of a group of its Area Managers, part of the Service’s senior operational and strategic management level.
Approach
In order for the participants to increase their personal insight into how their personalities influence how they shape their leadership approach, we used the NEO Primary Colours Leadership questionnaire. This tool lent itself to not only a reliable and valid exploration of personality and leadership effectiveness, but also to developmental follow-up discussions with the participants, and the identification of any development areas and actions.
With the use of in-depth, personal feedback discussions and developmental follow-up coaching sessions, continued development of leadership was achieved.
Outcome
The participants reported an increased level of self-insight and understanding of their behaviours and the impact of their behavioural preferences and typical leadership styles. Several development actions and areas of attention were identified for the participants involved, as part of their continuous professional development.
